Into the wilderness vbs6/13/2023 7 I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty. I hope you’ll see it:Ħ “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. This week, I want to talk about Haggai 2:6-9, but it’ll be a little different, stemming more from the vantage point of some of my most precious memories. To many, it might have looked boring, as it lacked the cameras, huge crowds, and famous pastors Christianity’s been filled with as of late.Īnd yet, I would argue that this ‘boring’ Christianity is exactly what we need to revert to- a service and faithfulness based on relationships- over the ego-driven religiosity we often see on TV and Instagram. It was one of the most backwoods, downhome weeks we’d have all year. We played with wooden sticks out in fields all day, rubbed our feet raw on the concrete bottom of the pool, and showered very little before going to a small church for the actual Bible part. He always said this without much conviction, though he was a man in whom that normally abounded.īetween VBS and my grandparents, lives were changed. I’m sending y’all back to your parents, now.” “This is the last time y’all are ever going to stay at my house all together. It sounds like nighttime giggles as 6 young kids all sleep in pallets on the floor of the same room, followed by the creak of your Pa’s shoes coming up the stairs to warn you all, It smells like fresh bacon and pancakes from Gran’s griddle. That type of love is best expressed in terms of grass, swimming, sunshine, and goodnight kisses. The most standout feeling associated with this week is that of love- that warm, grandparent-y feeling you can remember being bathed in during your childhood. Is there anything that can transport you back to childhood faster than a smell?Īs summer draws ever nearer, I think about those familiar smells, particularly found in my Gran and Pa’s house: the chlorine on my skin after a night swim (we weren’t too big on pre-bed showers), Pa’s old, white v-neck shirts (he’d wear them til they had holes all in them), and pre-bedtime chocolate ice cream (on a cone, of course).Ĭhildhood is a formative time for us all, but one week in particular ties to some of my fondest memories I carry in my heart- Vacation Bible School week.
